What to wear for your upcoming studio session
Creating images in an all white studio is a beautiful way to keep the focus on you and the amazing connection you have with your family. There’s no clutter or distracting items that might take away from the simplicity of the portraits. This is where neutral clothing plays a big role as well!
It is no secret that I prefer everyone in WHITE and LIGHT TONES. There are some mixed options on when it comes to photographers and white. Some like it while others do not. My option is white and neutrals are perfect! Not everyone has to be in all white! All the colors in the palette below are perfect for sessions in the studio!
If you’re booking any studio session with me then I suggest wearing light, neutral colors! This can be white, off-white, cream, ivory, light tan, oatmeal, or light gray! If you scroll down just a bit, I have amazon links and Pinterest boards set up to help you find the right clothes for your session!
I can’t stress enough how important your clothing is. I shoot very light and airy and in order for my editing and shooting to be cohesive, your clothing much also match this style for the best possible outcome.
Milestone and First Year Birthday Sessions
I have lots and lots of clothing if you little one is wearing 6mo-18mo clothing! The studio closet is made up of clothing that photographs beautifully and keeps your little one the main focus in every image. I ask that clients bring their child in a plain white onesie. A plain white onesie (long or short sleeved) photographs extremely well and I love to start the session with babies in their onesie. It’s also great because we can simply add a knit sweater right over the top for a second look!
- I do prefer WHITE/CREAM over anything else, but other LIGHT neutrals are okay too!
- Neutral can mean a lot of things… white, cream, oatmeal, light tan/gray, and very soft earthy tones.
- Neutral rompers and jumpers are perfect! A chunky knit sweater and some shorties/bloomers is a great choice too. Babies tend to sit wide-legged it is best if they have something on that they can move freely in!
- Take a look at my Amazon List + Pinterest Board for some ideas.
- For girls… avoid dresses and skirts since their knees get caught under when crawling
- Try not to overthink the clothing… minimal is best. A simple white onesie or romper photographs great!
- Shoes: Your child will be shoeless for the session! Also, try to avoid socks… they leave lines on their feet!
- What to avoid: neon or bright colors, tops with words/characters, corals, and oranges or pinks that are reflective (this is typically anything bright).
- If you have any doubts about what to put your child in, just shoot me an email with links or pictures for me to look at!
Child + Sibling, Family and Mommy + Me Sessions
I have lots of clothing options in the studio for the family to use at your session! The studio closet is made up of clothing that photographs beautifully. We offer a wardrobe in the following sizes for clients to borrow clothing from during their session… Dresses for Mom in sizes S-XXL, Shirts for Dad in sizes M-XXL, Dresses for Girls 18mo-4t.
- I do prefer WHITE/CREAM over anything else, but other neutrals are okay too!
- Neutral can mean a lot of things… white, cream, oatmeal, light tan/gray, and very soft earthy tones.
- If you have a little one 18mo or less, you can refer to the section above for clothing inspiration for them!
- Moms and Girls: I do prefer long neutral dresses, but light/medium jeans or pants and a neutral solid color top works too. If you would like to introduce a print to the mix of clothing, it is best to do it with mom’s or sister’s dress.
- Dads and Boys shirts: Neutral, solid color top. Try to avoid polo type shirts and stick with plain shirts (without pockets) and long sleeve tops such as henleys and sweaters. Solids is always the best option. Don’t be afraid if the top has a soft texture. This will add dimension to the clothing and it photographs well.
- Dads and Boys Bottoms: Light toned jeans or light khakis colors photograph best. For dad… work pants are not preferred, but a casual pair of pants/khakis/jeans looks great.
- What to avoid: neon or bright colors, tops with words/characters, corals, and oranges or pinks that are reflective (this is typically anything bright).
- Patterns/Prints: Nothing heavy and make sure no one clashes. I honestly feel like solids is always the best way to go, especially for the boys. It’s easier to incorporate a soft print if it’s in mom’s or big sister’s dress.
- Shoes: Everyone will be shoe-less for the session, so just have everyone wear easy to remove shoes to the session! Also, try to avoid socks… they leave lines on the feet!
- Here is my Amazon List that has some great choices for Family and Mommy + Me Sessions! If the color shown is not a neutral, it’s meant to be the NEUTRAL option (grey, white, oatmeal, etc).
- I’ve put together a Pinterest board full of clothing to help inspire you! Be sure to skim over it!
- Try not to overthink the clothing… minimal is best… dresses for the girls, jeans and a shirt for the boys!
- Everyone being photographed should arrive dressed in the clothing you wish to be photographed in.
- Everyone should arrive in the clothing they will be photographed in. The only clothing provided is for Milestone and First Year Sessions.
